# Do I need Part B if I have VA health care?

The most common question I hear from veterans — and the costly mistake behind it.

Short answer: **you’re not required to take Part B — but skipping it is a bigger decision than it looks.**

## Why it matters

VA health care **doesn’t count as creditable coverage for Part B.** If you decline Part B at 65 and want it later, you’ll typically pay a late-enrollment penalty for the rest of your life, and you may wait months for coverage to start.

## What Part B adds for a veteran

- Access to civilian care close to home, without depending on VA capacity or travel distance.
- A backup if VA eligibility, priority groups, or your health needs change.
- The foundation for options like Medicare Advantage or Medigap if you ever want them — and a requirement for TRICARE For Life.

## What I tell my veteran clients

Think of Part B as insurance on your flexibility. Some veterans weigh the premium against their VA access and decide to pass — and for some, that’s genuinely the right call. But it should be a decision made with the penalty math on the table, not a box skipped in a hurry.

Bring me your situation — where you get care, your priority group, what you take — and we’ll walk through it together. Our conversation is complimentary, and it can save you a permanent monthly penalty.
